Jabra Eclipse Bluetooth Earpiece Hardware Review

Jabra Eclipse Bluetooth Earpiece Hardware Review

Oct 30, 2015

Jabra has mostly reached the point where one can be guaranteed a quality product. Its audio and wireless products are usually topnotch, and we have had the opportunity to review more of Jabra’s recent offerings.

Jabra does seem to have an issue with resting any perceived laurels, which is great for consumers, as it gets us new pieces like the Jabra Eclipse, one of the company’s newer bluetooth earpiece offerings.

The earpiece itself is a sleek number, with a defined angle asking the main shaft. It had a smaller profile than the Jabra Stealth, but is somewhat lighter, coming in at 0.19 oz. This one is aimed at right ear use, and the angling ensures this. It’s grey and black with audio perforations; an all-white option with matching case is also available.

The obvious difference is the addition of the charging case; as such, the earpiece doesn’t need a charging port. Instead, it has subtle magnetic contacts that come into play when the unit is nestled inside the oval-ish case. The case houses the expected micro-USB charging port, and the matching set of contacts on the inside effect charging. It also houses a battery, so that it retains a charge that can be used to charge the unit even when it isn’t connected to an electrical outlet. The charging puck mostly matches the earpiece in color, being black and weighing 1.23 oz. It packs in NFC and extends standby time by 4 hours.

The rest of the retail box contains ear gels and a micro-USB cable.

Using it is quite simple. After charging, turning it on is a simple matter of removing the earpiece from the case and turning off is the reverse operation. Pairing it will be simple for anyone who has previously paired bluetooth devices, and the aforementioned NFC is another option for pairing. Once inserted in one’s ear, double tapping invokes voice operations, call answering, etc. Noticeably, Google Now is easier to manipulate, and it boasts 10 hours of talk time with the charger case, and 6 without.

The companion Jabra Assist apps adds a bit more functionality, like geo-tagging, battery management, software upgrades and more. It still needs yet another Jabra app installed on one’s device to work though.

The case is a great idea, and works well. For some, it might take some getting used to, because it is a needed piece to control battery usage and charging.

Devious Dungeon 2 Review

Devious Dungeon 2 Review

Oct 30, 2015

It’s out now, and as such, nothing was gonna stop us from checking out Noodlecake’s Devious Dungeon 2.

To start out, when gets to pick a character/class from mage, barbarian or rogue. Each has a specific set of attributes, so the one selected does have an influence on performance.

In this one, castled treasure is the ultimate goal. Unfortunately, our main bad guy, the Summoner, isn’t particularly keen on guests, so there is a heavy cost for trying to get to the treasure.

The playing area translates to a 2D platformer adventure, with several levels laden with objects and such. It has an expected medieval feel, with fire-lit caverns and interesting looking decor. The graphics are especially retro in nature, which goes well with the pseudo-dungeon motif. It’s playful representation, not entirely unseen, but one that works well with this game in particular.

The game is kind enough to provide an interactive tutorial. Through this, one gets to learn the basics of control, including the direction system and two-button virtual touch controls: these control left and right movement, jumping, and attacking. This tutorial gets one ready, and allows one to get used to getting around and accomplishing different tasks.

The aforementioned objects are what really make the game interesting; some can be easily taken care of by a swipe of our protagonist’s weapon, and some can be jumped over; jumping is also useful with regards to traversing the layered platforms. But then, one needs to be on the lookout for dangers from above, and others that roam a particular ground level. There are bosses, RPG elements, gear to accumulate and more.

When it’s all said and done, success depends on weighing flight vs fight in some scenarios, and being quick enough to bounce around when needed, collecting all collectibles and moving on by unlocking new areas to explore. It’s pretty straightforward and fun at the same time. For $1.99 (with in-app purchases), it’s not a scary investment, either.

Templar Battleforce RPG Review

Templar Battleforce RPG Review

Oct 29, 2015

Templar Battleforce RPG is atypical and a bit familiar at the same time. It brings to sci-fi elements, RPG stylings and a strategic turn-based system that one almost has to try.

Backstory isn’t a necessity for me, but this game does a decent job of weaving together a fairly compelling yarn involving space travelers and the heroic fighting force from which the game derives its name.

Visually, is it quite interesting. The imagery touches on the futuristic, with dark themes and fluid movements interspersed with dialogues and cutscenes. It incorporates a top-down view to convey action, and there is a wide variety of visual elements added that help to move things along.

The player becomes a Templar, and rocks a Leviathan battle suit. The Templars are a futuristic race with the memory transferring gift of “templar lineage” which gives them somewhat of an omniscient edge in battle. Said battle suits equate to being 10-ft tall, and the main idea is for these Templars to defend Star Traders.

And so it starts…

The first few series give one a feel for the game. The attack mechanism is fairly easy to pick up, with the range circles and such, and this is key when it comes to taking on the enemy that one goes against. The battling is turn-based; this is a twist that makes strategy all that more important. One also learns that Templars have different specialties, which is also a useful nugget with regards to strategy.

As one gets more comfortable, and understand how to take on invaders like the dastardly Xeno creatures, the leveled gameplay ratchets up the difficulty. One gets to explore different sections and take on different enemies in different types of scenarios. Building a reasonable force is part of the objective, but one of the most compelling aspects is the variety of tactical concepts: capture the flag, puzzle-solving, scouting and more. The game really encomapsses several disciplines, and does so well.

For folks looking for an engaging romp, this one should fit the bill. It tolls the bell between “engaging” and “familiar” quite capably, and is great in small bites or longer sessions.

If being a Templar is where it’s at, $6.99 (30% off intro sale) isn’t too bad of a proposition.
