Syrious Scramble Game Review

Syrious Scramble Game Review

Nov 1, 2010

How many 3-6 letter words can you make out of “A N D R O I D”? Now check your list with the list at the end of this review. How did you do?

If you enjoyed that little challenge then you are sure to enjoy “Syrious Scramble.” This word game by Visual Systems Corp. uses a jumbled letter style similar to games like “Text Twist,” “Scrabble,” “Boggle,” etc. This fun and addicting word game is available via the Android Market in either the free “Lite” version (100 puzzles, ads, read-only leaderboard) or the “Full” version (over 8,000 puzzles, no ads, full leader board) which costs $2.99. I always recommend trying the “Free” version first and then upgrading if you enjoy the game. Ready for a rundown?

After downloading the game you are met by an annoying user agreement mumbo jumbo thing. Do like I do and thoroughly scroll past all the important info and go straight to the part that lets you play. Main screen menu has sub-par graphics but I’m not expecting too much out of a word game. Let’s take a look at the Main Menu Options (paid version):

  • New Game – Start a new game.
  • High Scores – List of personal high scores along with a Global Leaderboard.
  • Options – Set sound effect volume.
  • Help – Instructions and info about the game.

Gameplay

The object of “Syrious Scramble” is to make as many 3-6 letter words as possible using the 6 key letters provided in each puzzle before time expires. The timer countdown is located under your score and also provides an audible tick near the very end of the round. You advance to the next round by scoring at least 7,500 points or by finding one of the longest words in that puzzle. Scoring is based upon length of words, with longest scoring the highest of points. There are bonus multipliers for scoring words early in the round (so try to score the big words first).

There are 3 on screen columns all of which provide their own information. The largest column lists all possible words (words are hidden by dots until played) that can be made (Proper nouns and acronyms excluded). The next largest column is where you will be making your words and displays the current rounds 6 key letters. Last is the right hand vertical column which displays:

  • Round Number – Displays current round.
  • Bonus Multiplier – Displays current multiplier.
  • Score – Displays current score.
  • Time countdown bar – As time decreases, the yellow bar will dissapear (audible ticking near end).
  • Play Word Button (green check mark) – Press to play your current completed word.
  • Clear Button (yellow back arrow) – Press to clear all letters from word queue.
  • Mix Button ( 2 blue circulating arrows) – Press to mix letters.

“Syrious Scramble” can be played by using either touch screen or keyboard controls. For touch screen play, you simply tap the letter you wish to use or tap again to remove. Once you have your word ready, press the button with the green check mark on it. Your word will either be scored and listed in the main game screen window or it will be rejected. You can also use your device’s keyboard (if available) – key commands are as follows:

  • A-Z – Select letters.
  • Enter – Plays word.
  • Backspace/Del – Removes last selected letter.
  • Space Bar – Mixes letters.
  • Search – Clears selected letter.
  • Phones back button – Brings you back to last checked word.

I am extremely impressed with the touch screen controls. They are very quick and responsive. I was tapping like a maniac and the game had no problem keeping up with very minimal mistakes. Gameplay is fast, fun, challenging and addicting. At the end of each round you will be shown all the words you missed. If you are like me, you will look at some of these words and say “What the (insert foul language here)?!” You will undoubtedly see some words you have never heard of and before you go crying foul; the developers have made each word available to click on so you can view its definition. How about that?! I commend the developers for going that extra mile in providing an explanation of words. This not only eliminates debate but also extends a users vocabulary through education. A W E S O M E!

You can access more in-game options by pressing your phone’s menu key. These options are self explanatory and include:

  • Mute/Unmute
  • Options
  • Pause
  • Give Up
  • Last Word
  • Help
  • Share
  • Feedback

Another cool feature of the game is the ability to pause your current game at any point by simply exiting out. Next time you start the game it will pick up right where you left off. Great for when you need to take a break or get some work done. With over 8,000 puzzles (paid version) the replay value is tremendous. Throw in Global Leaderboards and you’re on your way to hours of word boggling competition. I found the game to be very enjoyable and can recommend this to any type of word game player from beginner to pro. The $2.99 price tag is a dollar more than I’d like it to be but it’s definitely worth it to support the developer who in my opinion did a great job creating such a smooth and responsive UI. So go give the “Lite” version a whirl and if you like it (which I think you will) go show your appreciation and purchase the “Full” Syrious Scramble.
