Line2 Now Available For Android

Jan 20, 2011

Toktumi, Inc. (see what they did there) announced the release of their groundbreaking Line2 app for Android. Originally only available for iOS, this tri-mode VoIP/Cell calling app gives you a unique number in which you can use to make calls over Wi-Fi or 3G/4G cellular data networks using VoIP. I know what you’re thinking, “Google Voice does this for free.” Not really, Google Voice is not VoIP and still requires an existing phone line, whereas Line2 does not.

Line2 for Android offers the same great features as the iOS version including:

  • Your own unique phone number.
  • Make calls using cellular voice calling when VoIP isn’t an option.
  • Call waiting, call hold, call transfer, and conferencing.
  • Visual voicemail on your phone or by email.
  • Text messaging (SMS) in portrait or landscape mode.
  • Android address book integration.
  • Use the optional speech-to-text function for texting.
  • Full backgrounding support.
  • Low international rates.

There are many advantages to using the Line2 app and for me, lack of cell service at my house is one of them. Also, if you happen to be the world traveler type, Line2 over Wi-Fi allows you to call any number back home for free or $0.02 per minute internationally. For $9.99 a month you can turn virtually any supported device into a fully featured phone without any MacGyver trickery.

As of right now, Line2 for Android is still in its infancy and not fully supported. You will need to be running Android 2.2+ and according to the Line2 site only 3 devices are “certified”:

  • Motorola Droid2
  • HTC Droid Incredible
  • Motorola Droid

That’s not to say Line2 won’t work on your device if it’s not listed but there may be issues. There is already a known voice quality issue on HTC EVO 4G phones so be aware. Luckily there is a 30-day free trial for anyone wanting to test the waters but after that it will cost $9.99 a month. I’m definitely going to take this one for a spin and hopefully I will then be able to get rid of my house line.
