Showtime Uses Augmented Reality to Cause Homeland Fans to “Watch Carefully”

Oct 6, 2011

Showtime has launched a new app in support of their show, Homeland. Entitled Watch Carefully, this augmented reality app has users scanning real-world objects, from traffic signs, to the recent Wired cover, to a logo of the show, in order to unlock exclusive video and intel on the characters and backstory of the show, which premiered this past Sunday on Showtime. The app appears to no longer provide access to an episode of the show, as scanning a logo now just leads to a 1-minute teaser for the show. Note that the objects don’t have to be scanned in the real world – digital photographs of them will suffice. The app does use interactive forms of augmented reality as well, as some bojects require the user to interact with the augmented display in order to access the content. It’s a unique use of augmented reality in an app, and is worth checking out just to see the way the technology is used. The app is available from the Android Market now.
