US Supreme Court Hands Down Bad News for Aereo, the Streaming TV Service

Jun 25, 2014

Bad news, everyone: Aereo in its current form is dead. The service that took local TV channels and turned them into digital video feeds that could be viewed by the Android app, by way of individual antennae for each user, has been ruled illegal by the US Supreme Court, who overturned an earlier decision affirming its legality, according to SCOTUS Blog.

While the wider-ranging impact is yet to be seen, the fact is that Aereo in its current form is dead. The service could always pivot and live on in another form, but it’s dead as it is at this moment.

Aereo, the service for getting broadcast TV networks on a smartphone or TV in the US that’s been hotly-contested in the Supreme Court, might not be around for long, but it’s going out with an incredibly handy app, as it’s just added Chromecast support. This makes it easy to get the convenience of Aereo, but without the need to have an antenna plugged into a TV. While Aereo service is still limited, the app is available now on Google Play.
