Finger VS Farmers Review

Finger VS Farmers Review

Nov 5, 2015

Mobile gaming has come a long way. I mean, there was a time when it was simply a stopgap… all about time wasting and/or bridging the time when one can get to a proper console or PC experience. Now, we are not only seeing ports of full-fledged PC and console games come to mobile devices, the reverse is indeed true; mobile-first games are getting ported to dedicated gaming platforms.

Pretty cool? Yep. It’s fun to be able to play a complex game during one’s break or on the train ride home, and slip said device into one’s pocket or pause said game to take a call. The options are almost endless.

Deep down, every now and then, I think we all have the urge to give into our gaming baser instincts. I’m talking about simple games, ones that don’t require a lot of brainpower to navigate. You know, a game like Finger VS Farmers.

The premise is scarily simple: one mans a virtual finger on the screen, and takes on a series of homicidal farmers intent on destruction. it’s war of attrition, with the player looking to drain the enemy’s life bar first by gesture swipes.

fvf3

The more swiping, the better one does. Swiping allows one to attack and dodge, and fore finger dexterity is a bonus. be warned, though: this game is best played in private, so that folks won’t witness the insane body jerking gameplay elicits. There are weapons to to buy, the play is leveled, and device shaking is encouraged. Toss in achievements, family feuds, bonuses and more, and we are happy.

In the end, it’s a silly game — and that is meant as a positive. It’s a lot of finger movement, and that pretty much highlights the main skill required to be successful at it. There is no in-depth backstory, no raging quest… just the glory of dispensing comeuppance by gesturing madly on screen.

In an age where realism are demanded, it’s almost refreshing to see the whimsical hold sway. In a lot of ways, Finger VS Farmers does one thing especially well: it celebrates delightful nonsense, and does so by not taking itself too seriously.

We all win, people, one vigorous swipe at a time.

Stick Squad 4 – Sniper’s Eye Review

Stick Squad 4 – Sniper’s Eye Review

Sep 10, 2015

If truth be told, I am not the biggest fan of sniper games. Call me a wuss, but there is just something so… well… final about them. Yes, some find it silly, but talking about it frees me.

I think…

But then there’s Stick Squad 4 – Sniper’s Eye, the fourth installment in Stick Squad series. It’s the sequel to the sequel to the original sequel, and looks to bring the best of stick figures and sniping to handheld gaming.

For folks vested in this particular gaming series, the general look will be familiar. One gets the expected stick figures, and they’re moving, relaxing and otherwise living in the lfe. the motions are mostly natural looking, and the visuals work well, even if perspective takes a weird turn a time or two. The gameplay is presented in first person format, through a scope for vision. Moving said scope is a matter of holding/dragging it around till one gets a target in one’s sights. There is a simple shooting button, and it is very reactive.

The player controls the good guys, and there is a storyline to frame the game, but it boils down to one basic concept: complete the mission, and complete it efficiently. One does get graded, and some of that has to do with accuracy and time spent on that particular mission. In every frame, there is a target — or two, or three — to take out, and with every successful mission, a new one is opened and simple rewards earned.

stick3

The challenge of each mission increases too. At first, the figures are not that mobile, and it is a bit easier to lock n and get the killer shots. Further on, a couple of newer wrinkles are added in, like required stealth. One also learns to be patient, and then quicker shots need to be taken, and then, one even has to use brain before brawn in figuring out how to make a hit look like an accident. It’s interesting fare, and it is fun to see how the developer’s imagination unfolds.

I think the game is a bit confusing in parts; not knowing the target leads to guessing, and while one can repeat missions endlessly, it can be a bit of a buzz kill. As noted, the motions can be stilted, but it is easy to get into, and the walkthroughs online help one ignore most drawbacks.

All in all, it’s easy to understand, plays well and does the series proud.

Stick Squad 3 – Modern Shooter Review

Stick Squad 3 – Modern Shooter Review

May 18, 2015

At one point in the Internet’s short history, stick figures ruled the World Wide Web. Animated videos showed stick figures performing many activities, most of which involved brutal violence. While stick figures aren’t so popular anymore across the Internet, they have experienced a revival of sorts on mobile games. From playing golf to running endlessly, stick figures seem to be leading active lives.

Stick Squad 3 – Modern Shooter brings takes stick figures back to their violent Internet roots. A squad of sticks must snipe and shoot their way through secret agent-style missions that take place in the U.S. and Spain. Gameplay is bland, but the game manages to capture the humorous spirit of the early Internet stick figures.

Players probably won’t be expecting any production value from a game centered around stick figures, but there is some surprising storytelling involved. Animated cutscenes give players some convoluted context to missions and provide some funny moments, but the dialogue seems like it was written for 13-year-old boys. Voice acting is comically bad, and it’s hard to tell if that was done on purpose. There are also some glitchy moments when mouths move long after the dialogue has completed or is it just not in sync with the words.

Right out of the gate, it is obvious this game was made for the same people who still enjoy the Internet’s brutal animated stick figure videos. It is somewhere between niche and parody, but it could be quite off-putting to those who don’t fall into that niche.

Stick Squad 3 - Modern Shooter

Gameplay is obviously inspired by games such as Call of Duty and Sniper Elite. Most missions involve sniping specific targets. Players will see the level through a sniper scope, and will have to find and eliminate those targets. This is very simple on early levels, but players will receive more complicated instructions as they progress through the game. For instance, in one early mission, players will have to take out a target but make it appear as an accident by shooting a propane tank on a barbecue grill. In another level that has players carrying a pistol rather than a sniper, the target must be shot without actually killing him.

In addition to instructions becoming more complex, levels also expand and targets get further away. Players will have to find enemy patterns and attempt to view the whole map before taking action, which can be frustrating without the ability to get a complete map view.

Players earn in-game currency by completing missions and performing tasks, which can be used to upgrade weaponry. However, this seems to have little impact during gameplay. Weapons mostly handle the same, and levels can be completed without upgrading firearms.

Gameplay is functional, but it is not very challenging or rewarding. Missions can easily be completed through trial and error, and killing off helpless stick figures just doesn’t provide a sense of accomplishment. Maybe it’s because they’re stick figures, maybe because they can’t fight back, or maybe it’s because the attempt at a plot doesn’t make players feel like they’re really fighting bad guys, something seems eerie about shooting enemies in the head.

Stick Squad 3 – Modern Shooter is mostly just shooting for the sake of shooting, and it is not fun even as a mindless timewaster.
