Given that Twitter has basically cracked down on third-party clients (it seems to have killed off the promising Tweet Lanes entirely, as developer Chris Lacy works on something else), it’s with a bit of surprise that Echofon makes its debut on Android. The client is a veteran of the Twitter scene, having originally been known as TwitterFon (and TwitterFox, the Firefox extension before that), and it’s now on Android. It boasts a Holo theme, and many of the standard features that Twitter cleients are known for: checking timelines, mentions, messages, lists, etc. Like other versions of Echofon, tapping on a link in the tweet itself launches that link in the browser, so it does share functionality with other versions, while keeping an Android-friendly theme. It supports notifications, enabled from the Accounts section in the Action Menu. As well, the app can sync with the Desktop version of Echofon for unread counts.
The app is currently in beta and there appears to be no ad-free version available for sale – yet. Get it while it’s still available, because there’s a limited number of user tokens available to Twitter client developers now. Download it from Google Play for free.
