Most people wish they were doing something extraordinary, such as running Google, being an Ice Cream taste tester, or piloting a space ship. Sadly, most of us will only be able to act out these dreams through some sort of simulation or game, which is where Planet Descent comes in. In this title, you pilot a space ship around a 2D playing area, dodging asteroids while collecting minerals for fun and profit.

This game inhabits a similar approach to the PC game Lunar Flight, except Planet Descent, as previously mentioned, is 2D rather than 3D. Planet Descent is also quite a bit easier, lacking a lot of the realism or complicated controls used on similar type games. That’s not to say that this mobile title isn’t challenging, but you certainly won’t need years of NASA training to get it either.


Probably one of the best things going for this game is that the developer took what appears to be a simple game, and gave it some variety. While collecting the green minerals is almost always your primary goal, there are plenty of secondary goals involving keeping your hide safe and doing some intuitive flying. Things such as clobbering surface to air guns or avoiding an asteroid belt will also be spun into the mix, making what could have been a dull game, a slightly nerve racking but lively time in Planet Descent.


The game also uses a noir-like art style, reminiscent of games such as Limbo, but with color. This actually helps the game stand out a little more while also making it easier to distinguish your ship from other objects.

Planet Descent is well worth the 99 cents, and will make you feel a lot better than you would after eating something off the dollar menu. It’s usage of physics, great controls, and neat art style combine to make a pretty delightful experience. Planet Descent isn’t going to rock anyone’s socks off, but it is a hidden gem in a sea of disastrous apps and games.

Namco Brings 4 Games To Nook Color’s App Store

Barnes and Noble’s Android-powered Nook Color is becoming more than just an e-book reader. The tablet has gotten an official update to 1.2 of the Nook software, designed to enable a variety of new features, including an update to Froyo, Flash support, as well as an app store. This does not mean official Android Market access, but there are a variety of Nook-enabled apps and games that are being released for the tablet through their official store.

Namco is jumping to the forefront of the Nook game market, with 4 Android games being released for the Nook’s app store, designed to be played on the device. First up is Flight Control, Firemint’s popular path management game, developed by Namco for Android. Next, there’s Crush the Castle, the physics-based puzzler, based on the eponymous Flash game, that has you trying to topple castles and their inhabitants by launching objects using a trebuchet. Next, there’s More Brain Exercise, featuring the famed Dr. Kawashima, who has become the face of the brain training genre. This game contains a variety of tests and games that claim to work different regions of the brain. Finally, there’s Learn to Fly, which puts you in control of a penguin who someday hopes to fly, like a real bird!

It seems as if publishers and developers are attempting to draw attention to their games through releases for specific devices – look at this news of apps for the Nook Color, as well as all the various games releasing on the Xperia Play. Drawing attention to Android apps is tricky enough as it is, and it helps if developers have some kind of external draw to their apps, through some kind of device. This is at least what developers and publishers are starting to bank on, and hopefully it succeeds for those looking to make Android more of a viable platform to do business on with their games and apps.

Airport Mania has quickly become one of my favorite games on Android. Between the intense strategy of trying to keep everything running smoothly to the fun visuals and catchy music, it’s just really hitting on all the main points that make a game fun. I’m having a hard time putting it down.

Although the game shares a similar theme to Flight Control, where the goal is to land various aircraft at a busy airport, the similarities end there. Airport Mania is less about managing flight paths and more about managing an entire airport. You touch aircraft to select them, then simply touch the points on the screen where you want them to go. You tell them where to land while managing parking stalls, refueling stations, maintenance hangars and keeping the runway clear. Meanwhile, you are trying to upgrade buildings so that all of this happens quickly enough to keep passengers from waiting too long for their trips to commence. It gets very hectic.

Besides merely making sure that aircraft are landing and departing on time, you’re also trying to match the color of aircraft to the color of a terminal. For example, sending two blue planes to a blue terminal gives you a score multiplier. Likewise, if you can keep a certain number of planes landing or taking off from the same runway, you also build up a score multiplier. Get a high enough score and you get 3 stars, meaning you played a perfect level. If you can get 3 stars on every level, you’ll have played a perfect game.

Another neat aspect to the game is upgrading your terminals so that they can service planes faster. The sooner a plane can get passengers on and off, the sooner it’ll be off the tarmac, making room for more planes. The more time a plane spends sitting around leads to discontent. Eventually, planes will either turn away or become less friendly towards your airport, so it’s very important to keep things moving as smoothly as possible. You can do this by adding in-flight movies and parking stalls. You also have access to a facility that will paint a plane a different color, allowing you to keep the combo going on certain colored terminals. It all adds up, so being as efficient as possible is very important.

I really don’t have anything to complain about Airport Mania. As the levels progress, the difficulty ramps up quite a bit, but it all comes down to how well you can keep things moving along so that the facilities aren’t jammed when new aircraft arrive. It’s a fun game that keeps you on your toes, and with 48 levels across 8 airports, you’ll have a lot to do. There are also awards to unlock, extra planes to purchase and other hidden items for you to find. It’s quite an entertaining experience that’s kept me coming back for more, trying again and again to get all three stars on every level. I highly recommend it.
