Rockstar has announced the release date for their upcoming mobile version of Grand Theft Auto 3. This game is probably the most influential game of the modern era; its 3D open-world gameplay, high production values and story elements have had an indelible influence on countless games to date. Now , mobile owners will be able to relive this classic, or check it out for the first time starting next week.
Rockstar has announced an official release date of December 15th for Grand Theft Auto 3: 10 Year Anniversary Edition. Note that while the game is a decade old, the latest Android technology will be needed to play them. The only phones that can play the game are as follows: HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, and the T-Mobile G2x. All of these phones were released this year, though it seems as if some other powerful recent phones are off this list, so expect it to expand over the next few weeks as other devices are supported. Tablet owners appear to be more in luck, as the game will support these devices: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, and Toshiba Thrive. Curiously, the Kindle Fire is left off of this list; it has to be a potential candidate to be added to the tablet list as well.
Questions still abound with this game: will the controls translate well to touch screens? How will the game perform on these devices? Will older devices get support for the game? 4th generation and later iOS devices will support it, even ones with 256 MB of RAM, how will Android devices compare in terms of hardware support? Most importantly, is the game still fun? We’ll find out next Thursday.
