Genre hybrids seem to be all the rage lately, mostly trying to mix together two distinct tastes like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, which is probably also what a future Android version name would be. Most hybrids are roguelikes-plus-some-other-genre. Here’s a hybrid that’s not a roguelike at all but is still quite odd: pinball and Metroidvania-style open-world exploration. It’s I Am Level.
By mixing in flipper-based action with tilting to move the spherical protagonist around, in a room-based world that requires backtracking, I Am Level manages to feel brand new with just enough familiarity to not be off-putting. It’s temporarily a free download through September, but if you want to get a look at the game’s early sections for yourself before playing, check out our video of the day below, and get ready to roll around, lest a giant foot crush you for dying too much.
