HP Officially Releases Android Source Code for TouchPad

Feb 9, 2012

Owners of the short-lived HP TouchPad will be glad to know that a big step toward full-on Android support is coming. HP has released the official Android source code for the TouchPad. This means that it should be easier for developers like CyanogenMod to release their versions of Android for the device.

Apparently, members of the Android development community have been clamoring for HP to release the source code, in part because devices did ship with Android on there. Due to the GNU Public License that Android is shipped under, derivative works must have their source code available as well. Now, because it was never a purposeful release, HP may not have ever had to release the source code for the TouchPad Android kernel. This appears to just be a good deed from the folks at HP, allowing their tablet to live on just a while longer – and with Ice Cream Sandwich as well, thanks to CyanogenMod9.
