uTorrent Gets an Official Android App

Sep 7, 2012

One of the most popular BitTorrent applications out there is uTorrent. Lest we forget, the u is actually the symbol μ which represents micro. And what’s more micro than a mobile app? Even the Galaxy Note is relatively ‘small’. So, uTorrent becomes truly micro with their new beta Android app. This makes it extremely easy to download files distributed with BitTorrent while on the go. While BitTorrent is normally derided for illegal distribution, it’s still a great way for individuals and organizations to distribute files easily without incurring massive bandwidth costs. The Humble Bundles have all offered torrent downloads of the APKs, and now it will be possible to download them without having to transfer them from a computer directly to a phone or tablet. There’s integrated search for torrents, and a database of legal torrent content to download. Sharing is caring, but just remember: mobile data is limited and pricey. Might be best to just use all this over wifi if possible. uTorrent is available for free from Google Play.

Last week BitTorrent released its first Android App uTorrent Remote. If you haven’t already guessed, uTorrent Remote serves as a remote control for the uTorrent 3.0 alpha client. What exactly is BitTorrent or uTorrent you ask?

BitTorrent (often abbreviated to ‘BT’) is a protocol that allows you to download files quickly and efficiently. It is a peer to peer protocol, which means you download and upload to other people downloading the same file. BitTorrent is often used for distribution of very large files, very popular files and files available for free, as it is a cheap, fast, efficient way to distribute files to users like you.
