The new hotness in mobile gaming is for big-name companies to work their licenses into popular games: Doodle Jump Hop, Angry Birds Rio, and Temple Run: Brave all took characters and environments from upcoming movies and integrated them into pre-existing games. Where’s My Perry? is a take on Where’s My Water?, except instead of taking characters from a movie, the source is the Disney show Phineas and Ferb. Instead of getting water to Swampy’s bathtub, the water fuels Perry’s tube to get to his next mission, as he’s some kind of secret agent platypus or something.

The core of the game is the same as Where’s My Water?, where the goal is to cut through dirt to get water to the goal, which powers the tube that Perry uses to travel. The overarching gameplay element is all about changing elemental properties of the water between steam and ice. Lasers can change the properties of the water, and the gnomes (which replace the rubber ducks of the original) need to be collected by water of a specific property.

The biggest problem with Where’s My Perry? is that the characters just aren’t as endearing as the original game. Perry is just the silent, stoic protagonist who doesn’t do anything beyond just sit there bemused – Swampy’s emotions gave the player a connection to the game that was invaluable to making the player feel involved. I just don’t care here, and on their own, the characters just aren’t interesting. I haven’t seen Brave, but the re-skinning of Temple Run still felt like it did a better job at fitting than it does here. As well, managing steam just isn’t as much fun as managing water, because it feels like it does its own thing, instead of the relative control of the liquid state.

For fans of the core game, or those who love Phineas and Ferb, maybe this will have some appeal. But I must say that I found myself disappointed and uninterested, where the original was an incredibly charming game.
