Experimental app for optical character recognition (OCR). Runs the Tesseract 3.01 open source OCR engine to find text in images captured by the device camera. The purpose of this app is to demonstrate OCR running on an Android device. Conventionally, OCR is run using a flatbed scanner to scan printed pages of text. In contrast, running OCR on images captured by a smartphone/tablet camera on an Android device gives much lower quality--but interesting--recognition results. The default single-shot capture runs OCR on a snapshot image that's captured when you click the shutter button, like a regular photo. When the "continuous preview" checkbox is checked, the app shows a dynamic, real-time display of what the device is recognizing right beside the camera viewfinder. The continuous preview works best on a fast device. A translation capability--powered by Bing--can be run after the OCR is finished. (Note: Since Google's December 1 deactivation of free usage of the Google Translate API, Google-powered translations are not working. I plan to fix this in the coming weeks.) Some notes on using this app: - Hold down the on-screen shutter button to auto-focus, and release your finger from the button to take the picture. Or just tap the button to take the picture without autofocus. - To copy text to the clipboard, long-press on the recognized text or translated text. - The same suggestions for effectively using the camera work as in other apps, such as Google Goggles or Google Docs: hold the camera steady, with the camera lens perpendicular to the word or characters you want to capture, and be sure the autofocus engages before taking the picture. The AR (Augmented Reality) Sudoku Solver is a tech demo that uses the phone's camera to find sudoku grids, solve them and project the results back into the picture. The program expects the grid to be freestanding, flat and not manually filled. Best results are achieved in good lightning conditions. The solver does not try to solve grids with less than 20 symbols (not restricted to numbers). All symbols must appear at least once. Use the volume keys to toggle debug visualizations. This is not a game, just a tech demo without any practical application that I know of.

Loquendo TTS voices on the Android Market have been created to enrich your Android phone with Loquendo's expressive and fluent synthetic speech to power your navigation apps, SMS/email readers, screen readers, task managers with vocal alerts and any talking application on your Android phone. Please note that user-installed TTS are only supported by Android 2.2 (Froyo) or later. Installation 1. First, click on the application icon that has now appeared in your application menu (e.g. Loquendo TTS Paola): you'll be prompted to start the voice download and installation (“Install” button). NB: Downloading means that 30-45 MB of data will be downloaded from a Loquendo remote computer: if you don't have a “flat” data plan please consider connecting your smartphone to a Wi-Fi access point instead of using your GPRS/3G connection. Should the installation get stuck or fail, please check the following: • your device has access to the network • your device has a working storage card • your device hasn’t lost the network connection while downloading, otherwise some data will be missing In this case, interrupt the installation and start over. Now you are ready to try out Loquendo speech! Try playing around with the demo: edit the sample text to create your own sentences - with or without emoticons! 2. The Loquendo TTS speaking rate can be adjusted via “Speech rate”, available in the Android general settings on the “Text-to-Speech Settings” page. Currently the LTTS Demo will not be affected by this setting, but all applications using TTS will be. Reading styles Loquendo TTS Paola allows you to enable a “Messaging” reading style.
