Comixology Updates App, Removing Google Play Payments and Offering $5 Credit to Users

Apr 28, 2014

Comixology has made a change to the way that they bill for comics: where previously they used Google Play’s in-app billing system, now the app uses its own billing, so users will need to input their credit card info with Comixology or pay with PayPal. Despite the Amazon buyout, Amazon Payments are not yet supported. For the inconvenience, a $5 store credit has been applied to users’ accounts.

This move was most likely made in order to avoid the 30% fee that Apple and Google each charge for selling through their stores and payment systems. This situation on Android is much more favorable than the one on iOS, where Apple’s policies make it so that any purchases at all have to be through iTunes, so users can’t buy comics through the app at all, only through a browser, similar to Kindle. On Google Play, Google allows for non-Google-Play billing only “where payment is for digital content or goods that may be consumed outside of the app itself.” As such, Android users have it much better off than iOS users, though as one person who bought $50 of Google Play credit specifically for buying comics has indicated, Android users are not entirely happy about this.

The 3.6 update for Comixology is available now.
