Google promised faster updates for their apps released into the Android Market and they weren’t kidding. It’s been less than three months since the Gmail app for Android went to Market and we already have ourselves (Android 2.2+) another update. The latest Gmail version 2.3.2 brings with it better “Priority Inbox” support plus improved “Compose,” bringing it one step closer to the familiar desktop Gmail that we love. If you have “Priority Inbox” set up on your desktop you will now be able to view all your important messages in the new “Priority Inbox” view. View, archive, delete or mark important/unimportant all from within this view. You can even set up the option for your phone to notify, vibrate, or ring on just your new important mail, making it easier to identify important messages as they come in.
Composing mail inside the Gmail app has also gained more features of its desktop counterpart. Replying has improved with the option to easily switch between reply, reply all, and forward while writing your response. Also included in this update is the ability to send mail using any address you have configured in the desktop version of Gmail and the option to respond to messages in-line. With each update we continue to move forward towards a complete desktop experience right on our handheld device. Unfortunately, only devices running Android 2.2 and above will be able to get these updates and I foresee many more updates for multiple apps in the near future as Google and Android prepare for devices soon to be running Gingerbread.
For those of you not seeing an update, that may be due to the fact that you have never installed Gmail from the Market but have a preloaded version on your phone. Just head over to the market and do a search for Gmail. Proceed to download and install the Market version to receive the latest update. This will replace the preloaded Gmail app (you won’t lose anything) and allow you to receive notifications when future updates become available.
